The role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen at our site in South Shields for a Design Engineer to join our growing business. This position will be on a full time, permanent basis.
Reporting to the Design Office Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for generating designs, as well as associated documentation in support of pre and post customer contracts. They will also be involved with internal research and development activities.
Duties:
- To undertake conceptual design work in support of tenders, and detail design work for contracts and new product development.
- To produce and manage models and engineering drawings within the company’s computer aided design (CAD) systems.
- To utilise the company’s component databases to promote the reuse of existing designs.
- To perform performance calculations using the company’s suite of software.
- To perform structural strength of materials calculations to support designs.
- To participate in design review meetings.
- To liaise with other departments, customers and suppliers in support of the above.
- To prepare a list of parts that forms the skeleton for the bill of materials.
- To generate and transfer the required departmental design documentation deliverables.
- To maintain component part records in the company database systems, as well as other documents required by business quality system processes.
- To always propose the most cost effective design.
- To work in a safe manner; driving positive behaviour and leading by example with regard to the company’s health, safety and environmental policies.
- To carry out any other duties not listed above as may reasonably be expected.
The person:
The successful candidate will need to be educated to HNC level or equivalent in mechanical engineering with the ability to demonstrate knowledge of the strength of materials.
It is essential that the candidate has experience of designing castings, fabrications and precision machined, close toleranced, turned and milled components. Familiarity of international standards/directives related to the design and testing of products for use in naval, nuclear and hazardous area applications would be beneficial.
The successful candidate will also need full design life cycle experience with excellent 3D CAD modelling and 2D technical drawing skills (preferably Creo or Pro/Engineer). An understanding of MathCAD, Windchill and Microsoft Office applications is also desirable.
They will also have good organisational and time management skills which are essential, as is being a good problem solver with the ability to work to tight deadlines.
Hours of work are 37 hours, however the successful candidates must have a flexible approach to working hours.
What we offer:
The successful candidate will receive a ‘new starter’ payment of £375.00 after 6 continuous months of employment and a further £375.00 after 12 continuous months (payment is subject to the terms and conditions of the scheme).
